"A house is made of boards and beams. A home is made of love and dreams."
I've had it! No more empty and plain white walls engulfing us in my son's bathroom. Every night for his bath it was as if we were locked in an insane asylum with nothing to stimulate our thoughts except for feeling bad for everyone who is in the same position as us! The usual solution for this problem?...paint. But to be honest, I just don't have the time and energy to paint right now. Plus, we have super high ceilings so that just makes the project even more daunting. So MY solution was just to add some color on the walls and make my own artwork...all for under $10 ( I already had the mirror and shower curtain so those don't count in the $10). Impressed, yet? Well this is super easy and anyone can do it.
SHOWER CURTAIN:
Let's start by sprucing up your plain shower curtain. I had this plain white one from our old house because our bathroom was painted a sage green so the white added some freshness. Unfortunately, the white shower curtain does not add that same freshness to this bathroom...it just adds "blah". So I took the rubber ducks, used my hole punch to punch a hole at the top, and then strung some colorful ribbon through it. I tied a bow and hooked it around the shower curtain hooks. I only did three, spaced them out, and hung them at different heights. I was impressed by the punch of color and fun it adds for a kids bathroom. And the best part is where I found these ducks. I bought them awhile ago at The Dollar Tree (they really need to hire me as a spokesperson). They are actually meant to be put on the bottom of the bathtub to keep you from slipping. Well...they didn't quite work that well for that purpose. I held on to them and they were part of my son's toy collection in the bathtub until now.
DUCK ARTWORK:
Take some canvas (or I used a couple pieces of cardboard attached together) and glue your favorite paper to it. Fold the edges over and tape it to the back. Then apply some Mod Podge to protect it from the water and steam. Let dry. Grab your strongest glue you have (I used KrazyGlue) and glue the duck (found in a pack of 6 at the Dollar Tree) to the center. Then take the decorative marbles and use a glue for glass (I used KrazyGlue) and attach them around the edges to make your own design.
TOWELS:
I found some bright towels that matched my bathroom colors at Wal-Mart for $2.50 and to my surprise, they are actually pretty decent towels. Instead of storing them in the linen closet, I hung them to add some more color.
This is a great project for people who are renting and can't paint, or who just want a temporary fix to their boring bathroom. You could also make the duck artwork and give it as a gift for a new baby or young child. Some variations could be adding some ribbon at the top to hang it from, making a larger size canvas with multiple ducks, adding some cute bathtub rhymes or songs, etc.
I hope you enjoyed my $10, less than 2 hour bathroom makeover! Hopefully it has inspired some ideas to spruce up a certain "blah" spot in your home!
Be inspired, get creative, and have fun!
